Waterfall Track

Half day walk

Key Information

  • Distance - 2.44km
  • Estimated Time - 3 hrs return

Climb through mountain beech / tawhai forest to the spectacular 41m Dog Stream waterfall. Along with Conical Hill, the Waterfall Track is among the most sought after walks in the Hanmer Basin. The winding and moderately steep trail begins at the top of McIntyres Road (accessed off Jollies Pass Road) and heads up the stream edge through dense native forest. The walk is interesting and varied as it traverses the watershed just above the deep gutter of Dog Stream, (parents with young children need to take care at several places along this track). It climbs up wooden stairways in the forest and sidles along small cliff faces to reach the small basin into which the waterfall plummets.

Experienced walkers can return via the Spur Track and Fir Trail. A great day tramp can be had by linking the Spur Trail and Waterfall tracks with the Dog Stream Timberlands circuit.
