The Graveler is more than just a bike race — it’s an epic all-day journey through some of South Island’s wildest scenery. Riders tackle long stretches of gravel, river crossings, high-country expanses, and dramatic landscapes that few ever see. It attracts riders who want a memorable challenge, combining endurance, technique, and awe-inspiring views.
It is a 132 km point-to-point adventure that pushes riders through some of the most remote and spectacular backcountry terrain in the country. The race starts just outside Hanmer Springs, at the junction of Tophouse, Clarence Valley, and Molesworth Roads. The course winds through Molesworth Station, New Zealand’s largest high-country farm and finishes back in Hanmer Springs Domain.
Competitors ride predominantly on gravel roads with only about 400 m of sealed road at the finish — making it a true gravel experience.

The race starts at 8am on Saturday 13 February 2027, at the intersection of Tophouse, Clarence Valley, and Molesworth Roads, just outside Hanmer Springs. Riders can compete on gravel bikes, mountain bikes (hardtail recommended), or e-bikes in a non-competitive section — with e-bike riders required to carry two spare batteries. Water stations are available at approximately 75km and 100km, plus the finish, but there are no bag drops due to the remote location.
Cut-off times apply along the course: 11:00am at the Severn-Sedgemere Road (~55km), 12:15pm onto Rainbow Road (~75km), and 4:00pm at the finish — riders who miss these will be pulled from the course by marshals. A bike drop-off and security service is available the evening before at the start line, along with a bus option (66 seats) departing Hanmer Domain at 7am on race day. Prize giving takes place around 4:15pm at Hanmer Springs Domain. Riders are reminded that Molesworth Station is working farmland — stick to formed roads, and don't ride the route outside the event, to help protect access for future years.
