Hanmer Springs Village Walks
The Hanmer Springs Community Board has developed a network of walkways through Hanmer Springs. These walkways provide convenient paths for residents and visitors to connect with the extensive range of recreational tracks in the adjacent forest areas.
The walkways are mostly of even grade and surfaced in lime-chip, with asphalted concrete over a few high use stretches. These paths should not be used by mountain bikes which cause excessive wear and damage to the surface of the tracks.
The network consists of four routes each colour-coded with the Hanmer Springs Walkways sign.
- Queen Mary Circular (red markers)
- Grand Triangle (yellow markers)
- Chisholm - Dog Stream (green markers)
- Conical Hill - Larch (Brown markers)
Queen Mary Circular (red markers)
Duration of walk: A good short, easy walk.
How to get there: starting from the "Banana House" on the Village Green in the centre of Hanmer Springs.
Description of walk: This goes round the Queen Mary Hospital site to Argelins Road, beginning in Jacks Pass Road and returning via the Crawford Walkway to Amuri Avenue.
Grand Triangle (yellow markers)
How to get there: starting from the "Banana House" on the Village Green in the centre of Hanmer Springs.
Description of walk: This is a longer circular route that leads to Woodbank Road and returning along Hanmer Springs Road.
Chisholm - Dog Stream (green markers)
How to get there: starting from the "Banana House" on the Village Green in the centre of Hanmer Springs.
Description of walk: This passes through Chisholm Park with its range of cool-climate trees and duck pond, and then by way of St James Avenue and Caverhill Close to the Forest View and Larch Reserves. It returns to Hanmer Springs by skirting the Woodland Ponds, and following the tracks beside the Dog Stream in a southerly direction. Note the small waterfall on the right caused by an old seismic landslip.
Cross Jollies Pass Road, walking through an area of Sycamore and Willow to Brook Dawson Park. Return to the centre of Hanmer Springs via Leamington Street. A more direct return to the village may be made by taking the side track that leads to Cheltenham Street. Alternatively, continue along to the Dog Stream Walkway to Tarndale Place.
Conical Hill - Larch (Brown markers)
How to get there: starting from the "Banana House" on the Village Green in the centre of Hanmer Springs.
Description of walk: This starts at the northern (top) end of Conical Hill Road. Steep at first, this broad track steadily climbs to the summit of Conical Hill (550m) with its wide views over the Hanmer Basin and encircling mountains.
An interesting return can be made by taking the Majuba Track about half-way down, that leads through a recently logged area that has been replanted in Douglas Fir and Larch, and then on to the Woodland Ponds with their waterfowl.
You can complete the circular walk by taking the track through the Larch Reserve to Rutherford Crescent.
