Being able to get off the grid is a real luxury these days.
Lucky for us, we’ve got the perfect place that allows us to do just that – and it’s just a short drive from Christchurch.
Gore Bay is one of those places that is loved by locals but has long flown under the radar of domestic and international tourists.
If you, like me, have been visiting Gore Bay for more than two decades, you’ll be well-aquainted with its rugged shoreline, lack of reception, dolphin sightings and great surf break.
If not, then here’s a few more reasons why you should consider that turn off to Gore Bay, next time you’re in Cheviot or passing through the township...
Whether you’re camper, glamper, van-lifer or bacher, Gore Bay has a range of accommodation options perfect for weekend getaways or longer vacays.
For as long as I can remember, my family has hired the same bach out over January, and spent ten blissful days doing little more than beaching, walking and reading.
Each day is relatively the same... I like to park up on the beach with a good book and hit the surf when I get too hot, follow the rocks round the southern end of the beach to spot seals and take a walk up to the Cathedral Cliffs.
When the southerly blows, we escape the wind and head to the tennis courts. The surface might be a little cracked in places but we think that just adds another element of fun to the game!
Buxton Reserve, with its playground, bbq area and large green space is perfect for family picnics. A newly-installed concrete tennis table is another fun addition to the area. With a concrete ‘net’ – there are no shortcuts on this table!
Kayakers, surfers, swimmer, boogie boarders, paddleboarders, boaties and divers – you’ll find them all at Gore Bay. The best bit is you’ll still always feel like you’ve got the beach to yourself!
You won’t find any shops in Gore Bay and you’ll be hard-pushed to find cell phone coverage. So put the phone on flight mode and take the opportunity to let your body and mind do the same.
Does it get any better than that?
