Lake Taylor, Loch Katrine, Lake Sumner

Head off the beaten track and into Hurunui’s stunning high-country lakes for trout fishing, hunting, mountain biking and tramping.

Lake Taylor with its towering mountains and untouched beauty, is one you can explore by foot or mountain bike. Bookings are essential for the lakeside DOC campground. Extra for experts: it’s very exposed to the weather so take appropriate clothing and gear.

Just 8km up the road is the picturesque Loch Katrine. Camp beside the beautiful lake and spend your days fishing, biking, tramping or 4 wheel driving.

The road to Lake Sumner is a trip in itself and a 4wd is needed. With its beech-clad mountains and wide rivers there’s so much to do - day walks, overnight huts, fishing and tramping. Top tip – soak in the natural hot springs.

It’s also a safe haven for endangered species like the great spotted kiwi/roroa and yellowhead/mohua. The ideal spot for keen photographers.

Make sure you drop into Hawarden and Waikari for all your supplies, and kiwi hospitality, before you head into the great outdoors.
