The South Island's largest annual art exhibition
Long regarded as a cultural jewel in the crown of North Canterbury’s seasonal events calendar, the 4-day exhibition excites art lovers and green fingered gardeners a like, merging collectors level artwork with an unrivaled rural setting.
Art in a Garden will once again present a sprawling exhibit of large-scale art installations, sculpture, painting and ceramics within the outstanding “Flaxmere“; a garden of national significance.
In 2018 respected artist; Neil Dawson returns to the event as part of a collaboration with Christchurch based, SCAPE Public Art. It is our pleasure to share the experience of the SCAPE Public Art Season 2018 (6 October – 17 November) and welcome you to engage with such well-regarded contemporary art. Extending the experience into the heart of North Canterbury with Art in a Garden, the exhibition presents leading and emerging artists including Philip Trusttum, David McCracken and Kate Woodley, as part of the 20th anniversary SCAPE editions and celebration.
Iconic New Zealand sculptors; Gregor Kregar and Jeff Thomson will also be first time exhibitors, presenting their highly recognisable and praised work, topping off an extensive list of more than 50 creatives (which can be found in the next document).
New to the programme for 2018 is the introduction of a ceramics workshop led by ‘Small Stories Ceramics’; Susan St Lawrence and Helen Perrett. In addition to the display of their own work, they will be available to guide budding young (and older!) artists through the decoration of ceramic creatures.
This event takes the concept of an art gallery and turns it on its head, allowing thought provoking art to be viewed in a setting resembling a home environment, all be it a fantastical one!
