Flaxmere Garden is a vision to behold, for more than 50 years, Penny and John Zino have been creating and tending to the 3.2 hectare garden.
It is a labour of love and one that attracts more than 4,000 domestic and international visitors each year.
The beauty of Flaxmere lies in that it is forever evolving and changing according to the season. No visit is ever the same.
Each new season also brings with it new challenges. And in true Hurunui style, Penny and John tackle these head on. After 50 years of doing just that, they’ve got a winning recipe and one that has earned them recognition as a Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust which is affiliated to the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. It has granted them the rating of 6 stars.
In winter, the garden goes to sleep. But Penny will tell you this is her favourite time of the year.
Nestled among towering trees, the sprawling garden offers unobstructed views of the mountains. On a frosty morning, visitors can look out to the snow-covered Southern Alps, and enjoy a truly breath-taking view.
If you’re wanting to escape the house and shake off the winter blues, reconnecting with nature in this environment is a must.
Penny is available for guided garden tours on request, so gather your family and friends and make a day of it.
Flaxmere Garden is just 10km from Hawarden - a short detour for those enroute to Hanmer Springs or Kaikoura from Christchurch.
