The iconic building of Waipara Hills champions the Hurunui countryside on the roadside of State Highway One. Stretching out over the river terraces and situated in the lee of the Teviotdale hills, their award-winning vines grow all of the favourites.
Established in the late 90’s, the vines are younger than others in the region; but they produce a heavenly glass. Having earnt over 500 medals, these fine wines are known for their vibrant, rich aromatics and complex flavour.
Visitors to the cellar door can enjoy Waipara Hills Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, 10am – 5pm daily.
Proud to have developed Pegasus Bay wines, the Donaldson’s have been involved since the 1970’s. The Waipara Valley soil is their secret, aging and growing grapes of the highest quality.
Their stunning traditional restaurant looks out over the countryside with breathtaking gardens and unique wetlands. It’s award winning. They’ve picked up Cuisine Good Food awards almost every year for the last eleven years. It’s not surprising... the menu features delicacies made out of locally sourced ingredients.
Go along and meet the Donaldsons. The restaurant is open from noon till 4pm, Thursday to Monday, and closed for winter Monday 16 July - Thursday 9 August. If you're keen on a wine tasting or want to pick up a bottle the cellar door is open 7 days from 10am till 5pm.
Home to some of the oldest vines in the valley, Waipara Springs is renowned for their matured Mendoza clone Chardonnay. It was Bruce Moore who planted the first Chardonnay vines in 1982 and they grew up to produce award-winning wine for years to come.
Walk around the vineyard of 26 hectares and you’ll find Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Gewurztraminer. They’re famous for their classic but vibrant fruit driven style.

Black Estate is a family estate. Nicholas is the winemaker and he’s set on keeping his wines organic and true. Penelope looks after the restaurant, and her parents Rod and Stacey complete the crew looking after Black Estate.
The Black Estate vines are spread out across three organic hillside vineyards on clay limestone soils. The ‘Home’, ‘Damsteep’ and Netherwood Vineyards are located in the heart of the Waipara Valley and grow Resiling and plenty of Pinot Noir - it’s a red wine lovers’ dream.
Go and try it out. The restaurant is open noon till 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
