Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Hurunui is Greta Valley…a relaxed farming community where you can really get away from it all.
The turn off is well signposted from State Highway One and the road winds its way down to the coastal settlement of Motunau Beach. You can’t help but relax here.
There are plenty of holiday homes to rent and a camping ground to stay in. This is a rugged coastline that beckons fishermen (and fisher women) with the much sought after blue cod among the fish on offer. Surfcasting from the beach is particularly popular. For divers, there are plenty crayfish though it’s not a spot for novices.
The flat-topped Motunau Island sits offshore. Once a whaling station, it is now a nature reserve. It has a breeding colony of 5,000 little blue penguins which are a threatened species. There are also white faced storm petrels, fairy prions, oystercatchers and white fronted terns, along with three species of lizard. Visiting is illegal though – unless you obtain a permit.
Back up the road, Greta Valley’s green rolling hills are home to many farms and a school, church and library service. The settlement was established in the 1970s and the area was home to a 10,000-acre sheep farm in the late 19th century.
You can see a slice of this history at Tipapa – a Woolshed that was built in 1890 and has been meticulously restored. The property today has 500 acres – some of it is park like and you can stay over in the luxurious Tipapa Homestead.
There are a number of golf courses in the area too – one on Horsley Downs Road in Hawarden and another inland at the settlement of Scargill – a 9 hole, tree-lined golf course in a pretty valley.
