Walk down the main street on one of Amberley’s sunny Saturday mornings, and you’ll be sure to smell the delicious, freshly-baked bread and croissants wafting from the stalls on the roadside. Keep following your nose and you’ll find yourself at the popular Waipara Farmers Market.

This Saturday hangout is humming with locals and tourists alike. Stall owners don large smiles, enjoying their morning in the sunshine and the chance to meet new people and show off their beloved products.

Walking through the corridor of market tents, surrounded by fresh produce, jams, cordials and fine knitting may disorientate you, because for a short while you could forget you’re 10 metres away from Amberley’s main street – the set-up is almost exotic looking.

The Hurunui region is known for its farming community and this market showcases the best of their produce. Locally-grown fruit and vegetables, dairy products and meat; it’s all so fresh. You can’t beat an authentic garden salad, and you’ll find all of the ingredients at this market – including the salad dressing! Add some free-range soft-boiled eggs or treat yourself to a hearty Sunday breakfast.

Look out for: Goats milk soaps, children’s clothing, handmade cards, cordials, plants and well-made wooden garden signs.

So the next time you’re wandering through Amberley on a Saturday morning, make sure you check out the Waipara Valley Farmers’ Market. Rain or shine you’ll find them alongside State Highway One between 9am and 12pm.
